“Remember the fire inside.”

Good Evening all,

Tonight was the final night of our week at Bowles. To mark this, we had a campfire as a moment of reflection; a chance to remember those moments that have challenged us throughout the week, and most importantly – how we overcame them.

There have been difficult times for all the children this week. Whether that be kayaking the length of a river without capsizing, climbing a tricky rock face, or holding on for dear life to the dreaded zip wire – there were challenges a plenty here at Bowles. However, looking into the flames, you could see each and every member of Eagle class thinking about that moment of struggle. They remembered the feeling of panic and struggle before hand, and the elation that followed. I asked all the children to remember the ‘fire inside’ – the one that helps you get through difficult times. I want them to remember our trip to Bowles – not only throughout the rest of this important year, but for many years to come. And finally, I want them to remember the friendships they have made this week. Each one of them is significant, and many will last a lifetime.

Tomorrow we will be saying goodbye to this wonderful place, and the staff that have enabled us to enjoy ourselves this week. For this opportunity, we say thank you.

“Today I am proud of myself because…”

Good evening all,

I think it is fair to say, we have had some tired campers in our midsts. Action packed activities, 3 times a day for the past 3 days has it’s down sides – mud caked trainers being one of those. However, Eagle class have been determined not to let tiredness get in the way of having fun and challenging themselves to do new things.

Mr K and Mrs C’s group started today with their first kayak training session. Kayak’s were rowed, children were capsized, and everyone had a great time. This was followed by an afternoon of orienteering through the woods. Despite one casualty to the treacherous shoe eating puddles of East Sussex, the group found their way through the wilderness in one piece.

Mr H’s group began with orienteering, and followed this with some excellent climbing. All of the group did brilliantly, with all children completing at least one of the difficult routes up the cliff face. One child in particular learnt a valuable life skill during the climbing session. He faced a difficult section of the wall, and at first shouted “I can’t do this, I don’t know what to do!” However, after taking some deep breaths, relaxing, and focusing on his next step, he overcame his problem and completed the wall with ease. Achieving this made him feel proud – a feeling that all children in Eagle class have found this week.

On that note, I thought I would share Mr K’s answer to our circle time question, “Today I am proud because…” In his own words, he is not a fantastic skier and rarely pushes himself out of his comfort zone. I don’t know about you, but this is what being proud looks like to me:

“I flew like a bird”

Hello all,

Year 6 have had another fantastic day at Bowles, and have shown excellent perseverance and teamwork.

Mr H’s group tackled the low ropes, with many fears of heights being conquered. This was followed by a fun filled kayaking session and finally our second skiing block. I think some of the group have been fitting in secret skiing sessions during their free time, as their improvement from the first to the second session has been astronomical.

Mr K and Mrs C’s group built some fantastic rafts, practised their aim in archery, and went on an adventure to Harrisons. Many a child returned with a face full of mud – and Mr K even managed to eat some (he’s a growing boy, after all).

We’re off for an early night, ready for an action packed day tomorrow.

“A leap of faith”

Good Evening,

You will be pleased to know Eagle class made it safely (if not slightly late) to Bowles. After a quick introduction to the facilities, we were ready to undertake our first activities.

Mr H’s group began with skiing, which after one session it can safely be said we have some future Winter Olympians in our midsts – despite one disagreement with a tree! This was followed by the group’s first trip to Harrisons. Imagine an adventure playground constructed from boulders, tree roots and mud – lots of mud. Every child has outdone themselves, and can be proud of their achievements, whether that be dragging themselves face down through a muddy tunnel, clambering up a rock face, or simply encouraging a friend to try their best.

Mr K and Mrs C’s group started with the low ropes course, and the dreaded ‘zip wire’, which every child courageously completed. When one child was asked how they got over the nerves of the jump, they stated, ‘You just had to get through it. You have to take a leap of faith.’ If there was one phrase to describe our time here at Bowles, that would sum it up nicely I think. This was also followed by a skiing session, from which there are some stunning shots of Mr K hitting the slopes in style (and by hitting, I mean crashing catastrophically!)

Overall, we have been blown away by how well the children have started our week at Bowles, and are looking forward to many more adventures over the coming days.
